Your ACT rego check confirms whether a vehicle’s registration is current or expired, shows the expiry date, and returns basic vehicle details. It only displays publicly available registration data — no personal owner information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I drive with expired registration in the ACT?

Driving an unregistered vehicle in the ACT is a serious offence. You face a fine of $700. Additionally, your vehicle will not be covered by Motor Accident Injuries (MAI) insurance, meaning you could be personally liable for any accident-related costs. If your registration has been expired for more than 12 months, you must obtain a roadworthy certificate and re-establish registration at an Access Canberra service centre before driving.

How long before expiry can I renew my ACT registration?

You can renew your ACT vehicle registration up to 3 months (90 days) before the expiry date. Access Canberra will send you an email reminder approximately 6 weeks before expiry and an SMS reminder 2 days before and 2 days after expiry. It is recommended to renew as soon as you receive the reminder to avoid any lapse.

Is there a grace period after ACT registration expires?

There is no official grace period for driving with expired ACT registration. Your vehicle is considered unregistered the day after the expiry date, and driving it on public roads is illegal from that point. However, you may drive your vehicle to an authorised inspection station or Access Canberra service centre to renew or re-establish registration.

Can I check if a used car I'm buying has valid registration?

Yes. You can use ACT Rego Check to verify the registration status of any ACT-registered vehicle before purchasing. Simply enter the plate number to see the current registration status, expiry date, vehicle make/model and body type. This is a recommended step when buying a used vehicle in the ACT.

Why does my rego check show 'No Registration Found'?

This result means no ACT registration record was found for the entered plate number. This could be because: (1) the plate is registered in another Australian state or territory, not the ACT; (2) the plate number was entered incorrectly; (3) the vehicle has never been registered in the ACT; or (4) the registration has been cancelled. Double-check the plate number and ensure it is an ACT plate (ACT plates typically have a distinctive format).

How long do I have to transfer registration after buying a car in the ACT?

You must apply to transfer the vehicle registration within 14 days of the purchase date. If you miss this deadline, a late transfer fee of $134.40 applies in addition to the standard transfer fee of $49.80. The late fee is non-refundable once paid. If you have evidence of extenuating circumstances, the late fee may be waived at Access Canberra's discretion.

Can I transfer ACT registration online?

No. ACT vehicle registration transfers must be completed in person at an Access Canberra service centre. You will need to bring proof of identity, proof of ownership (the vehicle registration certificate or a transfer document signed by the seller), and any other required documents such as a roadworthy certificate.

Do I need a roadworthy certificate to transfer registration?

A roadworthy certificate (Certificate of Inspection) may be required when transferring registration, particularly for vehicles over 10 years old or vehicles that have been significantly modified. The requirement depends on the specific circumstances of the transfer. Contact Access Canberra on 13 22 81 to confirm whether an inspection is required for your vehicle.

Full Vehicle History Report

A rego check tells you if registration is current, but a full car history report reveals written-off status, odometer fraud, finance owing and stolen-vehicle records — essential before buying a used car.
