Transfer or renew ACT registration

Renewing an existing ACT registration and transferring it after a purchase are different tasks. The available transaction channel depends on the situation.

Transferring registration after a purchase

For the usual private transaction, Access Canberra directs people to a Service Centre with the required identity and vehicle paperwork. Licensed motor vehicle dealers have a separate online route.

  • Check the official transaction guide before visiting.
  • Prepare the relevant signed documents and identification.
  • Keep the sale and transaction records.

Renewing an existing registration

Online renewal uses the numberplate and either the renewal reference or the last four VIN or chassis characters. Read the renewal notice to see whether an inspection is required.

  • Check contact details before paying.
  • Use the correct vehicle and reference.
  • Save the confirmation.

Expired or lapsed registration

A lapsed registration can require re-establishment rather than the usual renewal. Check the official instructions, including inspection and permit requirements, before arranging to drive the vehicle.
